Caution in Using Benzocaine with Babies

Benzocaine is a composition of a drug intended to use for sore throat and sore gums. It is basically use as analgesia and anesthesia to soothe pain in mouth and throat. But the use of benzocaine for such conditions can lead to a more serious case called methemoglobinemia. It is a condition in which the oxygen level present in blood stream are reduced and may result to death.

Because of that, the use of OTC benzocaine is not advisable as relief for sore gums of babies under 2 years old unless prescribed by a doctor. Cases about methemoglobinemia were reported by Pharmacists in US.
